Lash Extension Aftercare: The Complete Guide

The First 24-48 Hours: Critical Care Period

The first day or two after getting your lash extensions are the most important for ensuring they bond properly and last as long as possible. During this time, the adhesive is still curing and is vulnerable to moisture and oils.

Avoid getting your lashes wet for at least 24 hours, and ideally 48 hours, after your appointment. This means no swimming, steaming your face, heavy workouts that cause excessive sweating, or standing directly under the shower spray. It also means avoiding crying if you can help it, though we know that is not always within your control!

Do not apply any products to or near your lash area during this initial period. This includes eye creams, serums, makeup, and sunscreen. The adhesive needs this time to fully polymerize and create a strong bond with your natural lash.

Daily Cleaning Routine

One of the biggest myths about lash extensions is that you should avoid getting them wet after the initial curing period. In reality, keeping your lashes clean is essential for their longevity and for the health of your natural lashes and eyelids.

We recommend cleaning your lashes daily, or at minimum every other day, using a lash-safe foaming cleanser. Apply a small amount to a soft cleansing brush and gently work it through your lashes in a downward motion. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water and pat dry with a lint-free cloth or towel. Never rub your lashes aggressively.

Failing to keep your lashes clean can lead to a buildup of natural oils, dead skin cells, makeup residue, and even bacteria. This buildup can cause irritation, blepharitis, and premature shedding of both the extensions and your natural lashes.

Products to Avoid

Certain products can break down the lash adhesive and cause your extensions to fall off prematurely. Here are the key things to steer clear of:

  • Oil-based cleansers, makeup removers, and moisturizers near the eye area.
  • Waterproof mascara and eyeliner, which require oil-based removers.
  • Glycol-based products and micellar water with oils.
  • Heavy eye creams applied too close to the lash line.
  • Cotton pads and cotton balls, which snag on extensions. Use lint-free alternatives.

Sleeping and Lifestyle Habits

How you sleep can significantly impact the longevity of your lash extensions. Sleeping face-down or on your side can cause your lashes to press against the pillow, leading to crimping, tangling, and premature shedding. The best sleeping position for lash extensions is on your back.

If you are a side or stomach sleeper and find it difficult to change your sleeping position, investing in a silk or satin pillowcase can make a significant difference. These fabrics create less friction than cotton, reducing the stress on your extensions. Some clients also find a contoured sleep mask helpful as it creates a barrier between their lashes and the pillow.

Remember: Your lash extensions are an investment in your daily beauty routine. A few small habit changes can dramatically extend how long they look beautiful between fills.

Maintaining Your Extensions Between Fills

Even with perfect aftercare, your extensions will gradually thin as your natural lashes go through their growth cycle. To keep them looking their best between fill appointments, gently brush them each morning with a clean spoolie. This detangles any lashes that may have crossed during sleep and restores their fan shape.

Avoid using mascara on your extensions if possible. If you feel you need a little extra oomph between fills, use only a lash-extension-safe mascara and apply it only to the tips, never the base where the adhesive bond is. Regular mascara formulas can coat the bond area and cause clumping or premature fallout.

Schedule your fill appointments every 2 to 3 weeks for the best results. Waiting too long between fills means more lashes to replace, longer appointment times, and potentially the need for a completely new full set. Staying on a regular fill schedule is not only more cost-effective in the long run, but it also keeps your lashes looking consistently flawless.
